2007 Student Showcase

These award-winning Science Fair projects were developed by Nova Scotia students who took part in the regional Team Nova Scotia Showcase and the national Canada-Wide Science Fair. We hope they'll give you some inspiration for your own project!

Copper or Coincidence?

Student: Karleigh Turnbull

District/Region: Chignecto Region

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Karleigh is a student at Pictou Academy - Dr. T. McCulloch School and her project studied whether an increase in copper in the brain could improve an organism's ability to learn and remember.

The Amazing Alter-Leg

Student: Todd Mercer & Mike MacIsaac

District/Region: Cape Breton-Victoria Region

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Todd and Mike are students at Riverview High School and their project was the Amazing Alter-Leg - an innovative device that relieves pressure off of one's foot in order to decrease the length of time a person with a broken leg needs to use crutches.

C.A.R.- Controllable Autonomous Robot

Student: Arash Marzi

District/Region: Strait District

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Arash is a student at St. Andrew Junior School. For his science fair project, Arash used innovative computer programming techniques coupled with simple components to mobilize a defective remote control car.

Student: Kendra d'Eon

District/Region: Tri-County District

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Kendra is a student at Shelburne Regional High School and for her science fair project Kendra developed a mathematical model for horse show jumping competitors.

Student: Adrian Howie

District/Region: Halifax Region

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Adrian is a student at St. Agnes School and in his project he did experiments comparing organically and conventionally grown Nova Scotia apples.

Shining a Light on a Toxic Issue

Student: Carly Levy & Caila Henderson

District/Region: Chignecto Region

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Carly and Caila are students at South Colchester Academy and in their project they studied the effects of light exposure on three varieties of potatoes in the interest of consumer health and safety.

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Sarah is a student at Bible Hill Junior High School. Her project studied the efficiency of digger logs during low water flows.

Two Sides To A Speaker

Student: Ethan McNutt

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Ethan is a student at Bible Hill Junior High School and his project investigated the elimination of deformed sound waves produced at the back of a speaker diaphragm.

Treading In Murky Waters

Student: Sheralynne Deveaux

District/Region: Cape Breton-Victoria Region

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Sheralynne is a student at Riverview High School and her project examined the utilization of fluctuating asymmetry, the liver somatic index and the gonad somatic index in evaluating the health of a population of Fundulus heteroclitus.

Hot Pants - Recycled Polyester Insulation

Student: Evan Watters

District/Region: Annapolis Valley Region

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Evan is a student at King's-Edgehill School and his project measured the effectiveness of loose-fill and batt insulations made out of used polyester clothing.

How Exotic: The Presence and Effects of Exotic Matter in Nature

Student: Joseph McNeil

District/Region: Strait District

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Joseph is a student at Richmond Academy and his project was a study of exotic matter as it is theorized to exist in nature.

Student: Katie Collier

District/Region: Chignecto Region

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Katie is a student at Northumberland Regional High School and her project compared the Vitamin C concentrations of organically and conventionally grown navel oranges.

Mycological Medicine

Student: Emma McBoyle & Amie MacDonald

District/Region: Halifax Region

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Emma and Amie are students at Ellenvale Junior High School. In their project they studied three species of field-collected fungi - Trametes versicolor, Polyporus brumalis, and Pycnoporus cinnabarinus and tested them for antibiotic properties.

The Economizer: Harnessing Waste Heat Using a Stirling Engine

Student: Oliver Hatheway & Darren Rodenhizer

District/Region: South Shore District

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Oliver and Darren are students at Park View Education Centre and the purpose of their project was to explore multiple technologies in order to harness wasted heat energy in a novel way.

Eamonn is a student at King's-Edgehill School and his project studied lung capacity and how it effects performance and fitness.

Student: Brendan Peters

Brendan is a student at Cape Breton Highlands Academy-Education Centre and his project studied the feasibility of micro hydro power generation within the Margaree River watershed.

Macall is a student at West Kings District High School and his project studied how a refugium might effect water chemistry and growth in a 50-gallon saltwater aquarium.

Jillian is a student at West Kings District High School and her project explored biometrics as a way of identifying sheep.
