Grade 9 - Ellenvale Junior High School

For our project, Trash Talk, we conducted a study on the disposal methods at Ellenvale Junior High school's lunch program. Our hypothesis was 20-40% of the garbage the students were throwing away was compostable/recyclable.

For three consecutive days, we collected garbage from the 5 different lunch rooms in the Ellenvale lunch program. We sorted the garbage into 3 different categories; compostable items, recyclable items, and garbage. We then calculated the weight and percentage of each category. Our results showed that over 50% of the garbage thrown away by the Ellenvale lunch program students was actually compostable or recyclable.
