The Pressure's On

Student: Emily Taylor

District/Region: Chignecto Central Region

Event: 2010 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Grade 12 - South Colchester Academy

I performed a study on the effectiveness of pressure shocking versus temperature shocking to induce triploidy in four different experiments on Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus).

In order to accomplish this, I compared a vast amount of collected data and also interpreted other articles pertaining to this subject. Triploid fish can offer greater growth rates and benefits for fish industries. Farmers have been faced with the problem of nutrient shifts within the fish from somatic tissue to gonadal growth during sexual maturation. The study I conducted investigated the effectiveness of treatments and their effects on the fish.
