Pine-ing Fir Hydrocarbons

Student: Chris Melchin

District/Region: Strait District

Event: 2010 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Grade 8 - St. Andrew Junior School

I studied different methods of biomass conversion - pyrolysis, gasification, and wood pellets and performed a test of chemical extraction of hydrocarbons.

The chemical extraction was the most energy efficient, but had the lowest energy yield. The others used large amounts of energy, but produced a proportionately large amount. Apparently the amount of energy generated is proportional to what is used to get it.
