REZ DIET

Student: John Stevens & Tanis Sylliboy

District/Region: Mi'kmaq First Nations

Event: 2011 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Grade 12 - Eskasoni High School

This project focuses on the diet of First Nation People today compared to that of pre-European contact. After European contact the Mi'kmaq lifestyle changed. We were curious as to how this new lifestyle has affected our people. The Mi'kmaq people in our community are dealing with a 60% rate of diabetes, high obesity rate, high level of heart disease and cancer. To help in our study we tested the acidity level of various foods including the wild game and berries used by our ancestors.
