Creative Capacity: Discovering the Education Path to Divergent Thinking

Student: Briony Merritt & Ellen Withers

District/Region: Halifax Region

Event: 2012 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Grade 12 - Citadel High School

This investigation examines the retention of divergent thinking within the Canadian education system. Studies suggest that children contain the ability to think 'divergently', but flaws in schooling methods cause them to progressively lose this skill. This experiment aims to determine whether the International Baccalaureate program, private schools marketed as 'creative', or a standard Nova Scotia diploma program harnesses better divergent thinking in their students.
