The Amazing Alter-Leg

Student: Todd Mercer & Mike MacIsaac

District/Region: Cape Breton-Victoria Region

Event: 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Todd and Mike are students at Riverview High School and their project was the Amazing Alter-Leg - an innovation that incorporates the use of material such as springs, sponge, and a heel stirrup to create a device that relieves pressure off of one's foot in order to decrease the length of time a person with a broken leg needs to use crutches.

After numerous tests, the Alter-Leg proved to be more convenient and safer compared to crutches.

Todd and Mike earned a Silver Medal in Engineering, the S.M. Blair Family Foundation Award and a University of Western Ontario Scholarship for their project at the 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair in Truro. They are young Nova Scotians celebrating science and discovery. Congratulations Todd and Mike!
