Clean Energy from Scrap Tire Combustion

Student: Darren Rodenhizer

District/Region: South Shore District

Event: 2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Darren is a grade 12 student at Park View Education Centre. His project, 'Clean Energy from Scrap Tire Combustion', was to discover a way to produce clean energy by burning scrap tires. At his Regional Science Fair, Darren won a 100 dollar APENS Engineering Award.

Darren first conducted an infrared spectrometry analysis to identify the combustion products of vulcanized rubber. He then constructed a carbon dioxide filter and incorporated it into an incinerator system that burns scrap tires to produce thermal energy. The main byproducts of his system are calcium carbonate, water vapor, and tire ash, meaning that his system was successful in producing clean energy.

At the Nationals, Darren was awarded a Gold Medal in the Environmental Innovation category and a Bronze Medal in the Engineering category. He also won scholarships to the University of Western Ontario ($1000) and the University of Ottawa ($21,000!), and was awarded the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award. Congratulations, Darren!
