Some Like It Hot!

Student: Graham Mann

District/Region: South Shore District

Event: 2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Graham is a grade 10 student at Park View Education Centre. His project, 'Some Like It Hot! Thermoelectric Generation Using Waste Heat from a Car Engine' explored the potential for converting waste heat from a combustion engine into useful electrical energy. At his Regional Science Fair, Graham won an APENS Engineering Award as well as a Peer Choice Award.

A prototype module which used thermoelectric generators was designed, constructed, and tested to prove that this device demonstrates a high level of promise for energy savings and greenhouse gas reduction if adopted widely in motor vehicles.

At Nationals, Graham earned a Silver Medal in the Engineering category and a Bronze Medal in the Automotive category. He was also awarded two scholarship prizes to the University of Western Ontario. He is one of Nova Scotia’s bright young innovators. Congratulations, Graham!
