Gear Up for the Environment

Student: Alissa Ali

District/Region: Chignecto Central Region

Event: 2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Alissa is a student at Northumberland Regional High School and she did her project, 'Gear Up for the Environment', on peak oil and global warming in our environment. At her Regional Science Fair, Alissa won second place overall.

This experiment was to test a lubricant that was hypothesized to prolong the life of engine oil and motors while reducing emissions, heat, and electricity consumption - while being lower in initial cost than alternative lubricants. To test this one gear box was used; the first 20 tests were done with oil only, the second set 90% oil and 10% lubricant. A 0.4% difference was discovered in power consumption, therefore the hypothesis was correct.

Alissa was awarded the Petro-Canada Peer Innovation award at the Canada Wide Science Fair. Congratulations, Alissa!
