Seeing Science

Student: Alyssa Moss

District/Region: Cape Breton-Victoria Region

Event: 2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Alyssa is a student at Riverview High School and her project was called 'Seeing Science'. At her Regional Science Fair, Alyssa won a Communicating Science Award, a Math Application Award, and a Gold Medal in the Intermediate Division.

This project studied the preference of visual art containing ordered elements versus disordered elements. Children, adolescents and adults were tested through a survey, which looked at aspects such as patterns, symmetry, organization and balance. Analysis of the data indicated that age influenced the preference of art chosen. These results could be useful in the applications of visual advertising.

At the Nationals, Alyssa received an Honourable Mention in the Health Sciences category, donated by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Congratulations, Alyssa!
