Lingering Herbicides

Student: Amber MacLean-Hawes & Rebecca O'Connell

District/Region: Chignecto Central Region

Event: 2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Amber and Rebecca are students at South Colchester Academy and their project, 'Lingering Herbicides', investigated herbicides. At their Regional Science Fair, Amber and Rebecca took Gold in Intermediate Environmental Science, and an award for excellent visual display.

'We studied two methodologies to gain first-hand knowledge on how herbicides can be detected in water and in soil. In addition, we carried out a case study to determine if Velpar could be detected in local runoff water from tile-drained blueberry fields. We tested for presence of the herbicide in water samples using Thin Layer Chromatography.'

At the Nationals, Amber and Rebecca were awarded the Petro Canada Honourable Mention Award in the Earth and Environmental Sciences category.

Congratulations, Amber and Rebecca!
